Philly zoo uses an outdated form of elephant management known as “free contact” that uses bullhooks, a three foot lead rod with a hook and spike at one end that cause pain on elephants sensitive skin and bodies. Dulary would experience only positive reinforcement management at the sanctuary. TES Guidelines for Captive Elephants states, Management: 1) Any form of punishment is unacceptable. 2) No elephant should be struck, poked, prodded or hooked with any object or weapon.. 5) Chaining is unacceptable. Enrichment: 1) Elephants should never be housed alone.
