November 19, 2009, "Chamber Dinner Gets Wild," Michelle Ganassi, Daily American
Dr. Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, was the keynote speaker at the 69th annual chamber banquet — which had the biggest turnout ever. During her speech she discussed how Kallie and Bette, the African elephants from the Philadelphia Zoo who moved to the Fairhope facility in July, were adjusting to Somerset County.
“Bette doesn’t like bugs,” she said. “But they love the trees.” Baker said the ladies enjoy spending time in the outdoors at the ICC. “They’re really enjoying it,” she told the crowd.
The zoo has a goal of expanding the African elephant population. The elephants recently had a reproduction examination and will have another in a few months to see if they are ready to reproduce. If so, Baker said they would aim to breed the elephants sometime between April and June. Their gestation period is 22 to 24 months.
